Archbishop Leo traveled to St. Patrick’s Parish in Markham on March 17 to celebrate Mass and take part in a special St. Patrick’s Day reception in the parish’s “Shamrock Café.”

“A very warm welcome to His Grace, Archbishop Francis Leo, for joining us on this beautiful feast day of St. Patrick,” said Fr. Dominic Barber, Pastor of the parish.

In his homily for the Fifth Sunday of Lent, Archbishop Leo spoke about the word covenant.

“We hear it at Mass and we hear it in the Bible. It’s a sacred alliance and an enduring relationship. It involves belonging, giving, sharing and it involves a pact that changes a life, changes the course of our history,” exclaimed Archbishop Leo.

“God is love. And because he is love and is a God of relationships, he longs for us to enter into a sacred covenant with him.”

Regarding the saint honoured each year on March 17 and who is said to have taught about the Holy Trinity using imagery of a shamrock, Archbishop Leo remarked that, “today on St. Patrick’s Day, we’re all Irish! A great Saint and the patron of this parish.”

“Thank you, Archbishop Leo, for being with us today and breaking open the word for us and reminding us how we are all truly children of the covenant,” said Fr. Barber after Mass.
